Thimphu City’s wingback Nima Wangdi found his fellow club-mate and club skipper Tshering Dorji at the end of a low-cross who did well to find the Guamanian net. Bhutan has a goal advantage to count on when they play the 2nd leg at Guam.
The match was played in front of 7,500 vocal home supporters looking for nothing less than a win. And the boys made sure that their 12th player did not go home disappointed. Low pass from former red Jigme T. Dorji was meant for right winger Dawa Tshering. But Dawa outwitted Guamanian defense, let the ball pass undisturbed and sent Nima Wangdi through. Nima then dribbled the ball into the area and crossed it. In the end Tshering Dorji rose to the moment and got the job done. The other time that Bhutan solely depended on a single goal at the same stage was when Tshering Dorji scored against Sri Lanka in 2015. And we all know what had happened in the 2nd leg.
The fans were great. They were loud enough to affect the play. Another City midfielder Karma Shedrup, who was the captain of the team, posted a note of gratitude to the supporters on his facebook page. “What an atmosphere it was playing today. It is truly amazing and a blessing to play In front of this crowd. Today was not easy and we couldn’t have done it without you guys. Thank you for always being our 12th player!”
Two other players in Orgyen Wangchuk and Phuntsho Jigme were unused substitutes.
Dragon boys will now travel to the pacific to play the 2nd leg on June 11, 2019. We hope the history repeats.
