Thimphu City FC continues to be on top of the league table following a 0-2 win over Ugyen Academy at Khuruthang. The boys had travelled to Punakha twice in the span of 12 days, having faced Gomo FC on August 2.
The opponent’s goalie was penalized by Nima Wangdi’s half volley in the 39th minute after failing to secure Orgyen’s low-ball freekick. The game was expected to be an open contest with only a single goal separating the two sides when our number 10 was sent off for a second booking. However, Nima Tshering’s extra-time goal ended the home side’s slender chances of at least sharing the spoils. The result maintains City’s position at the summit and having played one extra game, takes a three-point advantage over the nearest rival.
The coach stated that losing one of his main players, Orgyen, is a huge loss. He was, however, insistent that he has his sights set on deploying another talented midfielder in the next game.
The outcome also marks the end of City’s four consecutive games without a win against UA. The last time the reds triumphed the contest, coincidentally, was the same fixture back in August 2019 with the same scoreline. Mipham’s 69th minute header gave the lead the cityzens were looking for. This was then doubled by Jay Hart in the added time.
City will face Paro Rinpung at Woochu Sports Arena next on August 21.
