Thimphu City FC Ready to Launch 2025 Bhutan Premier League Campaign

As the 2025 Bhutan Premier League kicks off, Thimphu City FC enters the new season with renewed ambition, a reinforced squad, and an eye firmly set on championship contention. The club begins its campaign on April 22, 2025, at Changlimithang National Stadium against Tsirang FC, eager to make a strong statement from the very first whistle.

A New Era Under International Leadership

Leading Thimphu City this season is newly appointed head coach Shadab Iftikhar, a UEFA A-licensed manager whose experience spans multiple continents. Iftikhar has served with the Belgium National Team during Euro 2020 and the 2022 FIFA World Cup, as well as a coaching role at Wigan Athletic in England. His appointment marks a bold and progressive step for the club. With his deep tactical knowledge and global perspective, Iftikhar is expected to instill a high-performance culture at Thimphu City FC.

Joining the backroom staff is another exciting first: Syed Irtaza Hussain, the club’s inaugural Performance Analyst. Having worked with the Pakistan Football Federation, Irtaza brings with him a wealth of expertise in match analysis, opposition scouting, and player development. His introduction symbolizes the club’s commitment to embracing modern football methodologies.

Spotlight on Foreign Talent and Youth Energy

Thimphu City’s 2025 squad reflects a well-balanced blend of international strength and local promise. At the heart of this is Alamgir Ali Khan Ghazi, a full Pakistan international midfielder, who has represented his country at U20, U23, and senior levels. Known for his tactical vision and composure, Alamgir is expected to orchestrate the midfield and provide leadership on the pitch.

He is joined by fellow Pakistani Khurshid Alam, a reliable defensive presence, and three Senegalese players—Idrissa Badji, a pacey forward, along with Thierno Ndour and Mbemba Bangoura, who bring energy and technical quality across the field. Equally exciting is the addition of several young, energetic Bhutanese players ready to make their mark and carry the future of the club forward.

New Captain, Same Ambition

Following the departure of club captain Nima Wangdi to Paro FC, Orgyen Wangchuk Tshering has been named as the new captain of Thimphu City FC. A composed figure both on and off the field, Orgyen follows in the footsteps of club legends like Pasang Tshering and long-serving skipper Tshering Dorji (Tshagay). His promotion reflects the club’s trust in continuity, leadership, and the values that define City’s identity.

Fixture Highlights and Rivalries Reignited

One of the key fixtures this season is the much-anticipated return of Ugyen Academy, who rejoin the top flight after missing out in 2024. Their absence last season made Thimphu City the only club to have played in every national league and Premier League season since the competition’s revamp in 2012. The two sides are set to meet on May 3, 2025, at the UA Artificial Turf, following City’s opening clash against Tsirang. With a historically favorable head-to-head record, City will look to continue their dominance.

City will also face defending champions Paro FC on July 20, 2025, at Woochu Sports Arena. Paro has claimed the Bhutan Premier League title for four consecutive years, since City won it in 2020, and continues to be a formidable force. This matchup will be a crucial test of Thimphu City’s title credentials and tactical evolution under Iftikhar.

Another eagerly awaited clash is the Thimphu Derby against Transport United, scheduled for July 30, 2025, at Changlimithang National Stadium—a venue both clubs call home. This derby dates back to City’s early days as Drukstars, when Transport United dominated the domestic scene. Since Transport’s return to the top flight, the two have become frequent rivals, with City now holding the upper hand in recent encounters. The derby remains one of the most passionate and closely followed fixtures in the Bhutanese football calendar.

A Season of High Expectations

With a modern coaching team, strategic player acquisitions, and an unwavering commitment to growth, Thimphu City FC heads into the 2025 season more prepared than ever. The club is not just focused on results, but on building a culture of professionalism, pride, and progress. As always, the support of the fans—whether in the stands at Changlimithang or following online—remains the heartbeat of the club.

The road to glory begins on April 22. Wear the red. Believe in the badge. This is Thimphu City FC.
