Following a convincing 5-0 win over Gelephu at Changlimithang yesterday, Thimphu City FC are once again leading the BOB Bhutan Premier League 2021.
Despite leading for several weeks, Ngawang Dhendup’s boys slipped to second position following a frustrating stalemate against Ugyen Academy at the end of the first round. However, after Paro FC’s draw against Druk Lhayul, all eyes were on the reigning champions to reclaim the lead.
Four changes were named to the side that smashed 10 goals without reply in the reverse fixture back in June. Kinga Rabgay made is fourth start of the season and rightly earned himself the man of the match award with two goals and an assist. The injury stricken team from the capital managed to put together a formidable side and showed no sign of slowing down with a clear intention to leapfrog Paro FC.
TCFC took only thirteen minutes to break the deadlock through none other than the club’s leading goal scorer and captain sensation Tshering Dorji. He then sent Kinga Rabgay rushing behind Gelephu’s backline to double the lead. Less than 15 minutes into second half, Kinga’s solo effort from the right side of the pitch sent City 3-0 up. 18-year-old Kelden Tobgay, who replaced Dawa just after the half, scooped up a rebound off the goalie’s save and scored his third goal of the season. And finally, Karma Sonam came in as a 62nd minute substitute and scored a cheeky one two minutes later.
With nine wins and two draws each, Thimphu City and Paro FC are the only two teams unbeaten in the league. City will be on the road once again to play UA this weekend.
