Thimphu City Football Club was founded in 2012 as formal successor of Zimdra FC, which first recorded involvement in top-flight football in Bhutan in 2011, when they finished as runners-up to eventual winners Yeedzin in a truncated season consisting of a single round-robin set of matches in anticipation of the commencement of a new Bhutan National League.

The club is registered as Thimphu City Football Club under the Ministry of Economic Affairs in the name of Mr. Hishey Tshering,  the founder and currently the President of the Club.  However, it is envisaged to register the club as a limited company in due course of time once the club embarks on some revenue generating activities. The club was established with the mission to promote the development of football in the country and to actively engage the youth of Bhutan in healthy activities.

Besides, the club has also collaborated with international agencies such as UNICEF in a project entitled “ Empowering Women through Sports to Become Agents of Change” in 2017 where a group of girls from Sakteng were brought to Thimphu and exposed to not only football training programs but also taught some valuable life skills. The project was followed up by taking the senior women’s team of the club to Sakten to give them an insight of the struggles that people living in remote area face on a daily basis. Thimphu City FC is the only club in Bhutan that has engaged in such activities proving that the club is more than just about trying to win football titles.
